What is the Museum of Illusions?

The Museum of Illusions is not your typical museum. Most museums have informative panels and exhibits to look at, or they’re children’s museums for younger kids. The Museum of Illusions really is ideal for all ages. It’s full of different illusion rooms and optical illusions, where you step into and become the exhibit. It’s full of photo ops and makes a unique family outing. Teens will love visiting this museum as much as elementary-aged students.

This museum outing is a sensory, educational, and visual experience. You’ll step into different rooms, be awed by the changes in perception, and have a ton of fun testing out poses and taking photos.

What’s Inside?

A wide variety of unique exhibits and installations are in the museum. I’ll list some of our family’s favorites below!

Museum of Illusions Building Exhibit
My boys felt like Spider-Man when climbing on the building exhibit.

The Building Room

My kids were obsessed with this exhibit! It looks like you’re scaling a building and dangling from balconies. We got a kick out of this one, and there are many fun photo poses you can do. My kids love Spider-Man (my youngest even dressed up like him for Halloween, which was just a day before we visited the museum), and it felt like they had turned into him as they pretended to climb up and down the building. Prepare to spend a lot of time at this installation with kids!

Museum of Illusions Sacramento - The Color Room
Kids are going to love The Color Room at Museum of Illusions.

The Color Room

Another favorite of my kids was The Color Room. Primary colors project onto the wall from movement and shadows. My kids loved moving around to see the vibrant colors light up the room.

Vanishing Exhibit

Walk behind a partition and you’ll completely disappear during this effect! Just know that it doesn’t work if you’re wearing a striped shirt.

Museum of Illusions Vortex Tunnel
See if you can make your way through the vortex tunnel (but skip it if you get motion sickness)

The Vortex Tunnel

Walk across a bridge as the room spins around you. It’s actually harder to balance and walk through than you realize. We were warned that if you get motion sickness, you might want to skip this one.

The Ghost Room

There are two entrances to the ghost room—you can choose to be a real person or a ghost. The ghost appears, like, well, a ghost at the same time as the real person. It’s a unique optical illusion!

Head on a Platter at Museum of Illusions
The Museum of Illusions serves up fun exhibits for families in Sacramento.

Head on a Platter

What’s for dinner? Your head! You’ll enter through a box, and when you pop up, only your head will appear. The base is a platter, making it look like your head is being served up for a meal.

Beuchet Chair

This exhibit is a staple at the Museum of Illusions that plays with forced perspective. It looks like you’re sitting on a large chair when viewing it from a certain spot. However, it’s assembled from multiple parts that, when combined, look like a chair. If you’re a fan of Lord of the Rings like me, this one will remind you of the practical effects of forced perspective the films used.

Museum of Illusions Mirror Room
See if you can find the exit door when surrounded by mirrors.

Mirror Room

Open a door that blends in with the wall and you’ll enter an infinite mirror room. It’s honestly difficult to figure out where the exit door is!

Visiting the Museum of Illusions with Kids

I was surprised by how immersive this museum is! From interacting with the art on the walls to becoming part of the exhibits, there was plenty to entertain two toddlers. There are many illusions to spin on the wall, which they enjoyed.

What’s great about this museum with kids is that it’s for a wide range of ages. This would be a great outing for teens, or really any age, even adults.

Compared to other museums in Sacramento for kids, this one is just as good, if not even better than some. While the Crocker Art Museum has a great toddler area, I always get so nervous taking my kids there! Here, exhibit interactions are welcome. It’s okay if they’re touching artwork, climbing walls, and running around in the illusion rooms.

Museum of Illusions Scavenger Hunt
A scavenger hunt for kids at the Museum of Illusions is another fun interactive activity.

Scavenger Hunt

A highlight for kids at the Museum of Illusions is a scavenger hunt. They’ll get a flashlight and have to shine it on art throughout the museum to uncover secret letters. The scavenger hunt is included with regular museum admission.

Brain Teaser Room

Don’t skip the back room near the bathrooms! It’s full of brain teasers, puzzles, and games. These are large versions of items sold in the museum’s gift shop.

Free Admission for Younger Kids

Kids under age 5 receive free admission to the Museum of Illusions! Test a visit with younger kids while saving money on admission.

Display Panels & Photo Spots

This museum is an influencer’s dream because of all the photo ops. There’s an electronic display panel on the wall at each exhibit, showing what to do at the illusion, as well as posing ideas for photos. Plus, don’t miss the labels on the floor that show the best photo spots.

Make a Day of it Downtown

Since the Museum of Illusions is in the middle of DOCO, it’s easy to combine it with other nearby attractions, especially since it won’t take a full day. Expect to spend around 1-2 hours visiting. There are also lawn games like Jenga and cornhole at DOCO Plaza in front of the entrance to the museum.
