MLK Weekend in Sacramento has plenty of opportunities to pay tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. The main event of the weekend will be the 44th Annual March For The Dream at Sacramento State. The Harlem Globetrotters will be doing flips and tricks, and there will be free Ride Ready Mini Clinics for kids who want to participate in free bike clinics. These are just a few of the many family-friendly weekend events in Sacramento on MLK Weekend.
In honor of MLK Day, over 200 California State Parks will offer free vehicle day-use entry. There are several participating California State Parks in the counties of Sacramento, El Dorado, and Placer, as well as neighboring Bay Area and Central Valley counties. Best Things To Do This Weekend in Sacramento with Kids
NAN Sacramento and the City of Elk Grove will have a MLK Community Breakfast on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at District 56 in Elk Grove. This popular event will celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Discounted student tickets are available.
Kids can participate in hands-on historical activities at Sutter’s Fort monthly Demonstration Days on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 10am to 4pm. This event is for kids of all ages. $5 admission includes complimentary admission to the State Indian Museum.
Kids can learn about wild animals and meet animal ambassadors on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at the Rio Linda Library.
Kids can dig into a free Science Saturday focusing on slime on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at the South Davis Montgomery Library. All supplies will be provided.
Teen chefs can learn foundational kitchen skills in a hands-on cooking program on Sunday, January 18, 2026 at the Davis Co-Op Kitchen. This program is for beginners to learn basic kitchen techniques such as knife skills, pan sauces, cooking proteins, and more.
Kids can boogie on Sunday, January 18, 2026 at the Mary L Stephens Davis Branch Library in Davis for a free electric jazz show from Charged Particles.
The March for the Dream honors Martin Luther King, Jr. The March kicks off at Sacramento City College on Monday, January 19, 2026, starting at Sacramento City College and ending at SAFE Convention Center.
The 6th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration & Caravan in South Sacramento will take place on Monday, January 19, 2026. Observers can check out a community caravan with decorated vehicles that will begin from Luther Burbank High School at 8am.
The 8th Annual Placer County Dr. MLK, Jr. Family March and Celebration will take on January 19, 2026 at Johnson-Springview Park in Rocklin. This free community celebration will honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The family-friendly event will have a children’s corner with games, crafts, and activities, live performances, speakers, presentations, vendors, and food trucks.
Give back on MLK Jr. Day of Service by volunteering with EcoPress at a free Community Clean-Up on Monday, January 19, 2026 starting at Valley High School at 9am. All ages are welcome to participate. You may stay or leave for a little or long as you like from 9am to 1pm. Supplies are provided.
