Best Spots for Strawberry Picking near Sacramento

Strawberry picking in Sacramento is a sweet way for kids to get outside while learning about the region’s rich agricultural roots. From Granite Bay to Elk Grove, farms throughout the area welcome families to participate in u-pick strawberry experiences.

Picking strawberries is a fun and engaging way for kids to learn about the local farm-to-fork scene. Tasting ripe, juicy strawberries straight from the vine is a vastly different experience than shopping for fruit in the grocery store. Expand the family fun by making strawberry jam or other tasty treats with the berries overflowing in your u-pick buckets.

As the sun shines down on you in those strawberry fields, don’t forget to bring hats, sunscreen, and water when strawberry picking. Strawberries tend to be in season beginning in April, though crops vary from year to year. Strawberry picking is one of the must-do spring activities in Sacramento for kids!

Where to Pick Strawberries near Sacramento

1. Granny May’s — Granite Bay

Strawberry season at Granny May’s typically begins in mid-April. This Granite Bay farm is probably the most popular farm for strawberry picking near Sacramento in the spring. Reservations are required for u-pick strawberries. For reservations, tickets must be purchased online (and they sell out quickly!). Ticket prices include a bucket and the strawberries you pick. There are many different varieties of strawberries to pick.

Granny May’s is also very kid-friendly. They tend to have extra activities during the strawberry season that are especially appealing for children, like a petting zoo and shaved ice.

2. Yumm Strawberry Farm — Elk Grove & West Sacramento

Yumm Strawberry Farm has two locations in the Sacramento area. U-pick strawberries are available at both locations in Elk Grove and West Sacramento. There is a small entrance fee for u-pick strawberries and an additional fee for strawberries picked by the pound. That said, it’s an affordable local farm to bring kids to go strawberry picking.

Yumm Strawberries are known for their berries tasting very sweet! Keep an eye on their Instagram account for promotions they run throughout the strawberry season. Some past promotions have included free entrance days and u-pick strawberries for $1-$1.50 pounds.

3. Sun Strawberry — Elk Grove

This Elk Grove u-pick farm is an affordable family outing. There is a small entrance fee for strawberry picking and an additional fee for strawberries picked by the pound. Sun Strawberry tends to get crowded, particularly on the weekends. U-pick groups are limited to 30 minutes due to limited parking at the farm. On non-busy days, you might be able to take advantage of u-pick for 45 minutes to an hour.

4. Daisy Creek Farms — Galt

Daisy Creek Farms is an organic farm in Galt that has u-pick strawberries, as well as other u-pick berries. There are no entrance fees and no parking fees. U-pick strawberry pricing at Daisy Creek Farms is $5 per pound and $4 per pound if over 10lbs.

I love that this farm has the option to pay a separate fee to eat the berries while you pick. It’s $7 per adult and $5 per child. My two boys love strawberries, so I will happily pay for them to eat as many berries as they desire while on a strawberry-picking outing! Many farms do not allow strawberries to be consumed during picking, so it’s appealing that this is welcomed as an option.

5. Pacific Star Gardens — Woodland

Pacific Star Gardens is a small, family-friendly farm in Yolo County that has u-pick strawberries. This farm is a good option for a less-crowded, low-key strawberry-picking experience. It’s a more rustic experience. U-pick strawberries are $6 per pound and can be paid for via cash or Venmo.

6. 24 Carrot Farm — Placerville (Apple Hill)

24 Carrot Farm is in Apple Hill, and while fall is the best time to visit Apple Hill, many farms have other seasonal produce throughout the year. 24 Carrot Farm has u-pick strawberry picking. While the strawberry picking season starts in April at most all the farms on this list, it begins in June at 24 Carrot Farm. The strawberry patch is on the smaller side at this farm but has plenty of berries to pick when they are in season. Reservations are not required and strawberries are $4 per pound.
