August means the end of summer and the beginning of the school year. Speaking of the school year, here’s a list of backpack giveaways in the Sacramento area for families who could use these free resources.
Monster trucks zoom into Sacramento this month, and things get a little spooky at Summerween at Dave’s Pumpkin Patch. Go bananas at the Sacramento Banana Festival, and let the kids show off their dance moves at the Summer Shimmy at the Sacramento Children’s Museum.
If you’re already missing the California State Fair, the Yolo County Fair takes place in August. Kids can also celebrate bats, bees, bubbles, and reptiles at various events this month in the Sacramento area.

Spooky season comes early in West Sacramento. Summerween at Dave’s Pumpkin Patch takes place on Saturday, August 2, 2025. The mischievous summer night will have BBQ, a jumping pillow, live music, and family fun. Costumes are welcome but optional.
Head to North Natomas Regional Park for an AAPI Celebration on Friday, August 8, 2025. There will be kids activities, food trucks, lion dancers, a hula performance, vendors, and more cultural performances.
The Reptilian Nation Expo comes to Roseville on August 9-10, 2025. There will be thousands of reptiles and educational presentations. Plus, the chance to see alligators, crocodiles, caimans, and other reptiles up close during presentations and photo ops.

Children with special needs and their friends and families can attend Summer Shimmy at the Sacramento Children’s Museum on Saturday, August 9, 2025. Kids can dance and play during a fun night at the museum. This is a free event with registration.
Calling all wizards and muggles: The Sacramento River Cats will have Harry Potter Night on Saturday, August 9, 2025. There will be themed entertainment during the baseball game. Additionally, fireworks will take place after the game.
Danny Go! comes to Sacramento for an action-packed kids show that will help kiddos burn off all that energy on Monday, August 11, 2025.

Splash into Fridays in the Grove with a Dive-In Movie on Friday, August 15, 2025 at the Elk Grove Aquatics Center. Moana will be the movie shown. Recreation swim rates apply.
Kids ages 12-15 can cook quesadillas with summer veggies in solar ovens that they build using their engineering skills. Eco Warriors: Cookin’ Quesadillas with Solar Ovens takes place on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at Soil Born Farms in Rancho Cordova.
The Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary will be buzzin’ on Saturday, August 16, 2025 for Honey Bee Day. Kids can participate in bee-themed activities while learning about pollinators. There will also be live bee demos. Stop by the honey tasting tables, and don’t forget to pick up a jar of honey harvested at the Folsom Zoo.
The Arts in River Park Festival will take place on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center. This free, indoor family festival will have face painting, art, music, a pirate ship, and more.
Fly over to the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area in Davis for Bats and Crafts on Saturday, August 16, 2025. This event is for young kids who have early bedtimes. There will be bat meet and greets, arts and crafts, games, and other bat-themed things.
Celebrate Natomas returns on Saturday, August 16, 2025. There will be bounce houses and face painting at this free, family-friendly community event. There will also be live music, food vendors, and performances by Q-VO (Santana cover band) and Pickles and Chips (Earth, Wind & Fire cover band).
Potter the Otter: A Healthy Adventure is a new exhibit opening at the Sacramento Children’s Museum on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, running through February 8, 2026. This new interactive exhibit will celebrate eating healthy fruits and veggies, as well as the importance of drinking water and living an active lifestyle.
Cupcake the Donkey was a staple at Hagan Community Barn. Unfortunately, Cupcake recently passed away, and a free Memorial Event for Rancho Cordova’s beloved donkey will take place on Saturday, August 23, 2025. Pay tribute to Cupcake with crafts, a memory board, and more. There will be speeches and live music.
A free Family Fun Day will take place on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at Florin Square. There will be face painting, karaoke, fun activities, food, and more. The first 200 families receive free food.
Heringer Estates and the Wildlife Care Association of Sacramento will have a family-friendly Owl Release and Picnic on Saturday, August 23, 2025. Relax in Marjorie’s Garden with food and drinks while the evening culminates into the release of a rehabilitated owl into the wild.
Celebrate Harold the pig’s birthday with a pancake breakfast on Sunday, August 24, 2025 at Only Sunshine Sanctuary in Elverta. Enjoy vegan pancakes with fresh fruit and toppings from 10-11am. There will be other farm animals to meet before or after the breakfast.

Join Fairytale Town as they celebrate their 66th birthday on Friday, August 29, 2025. Humpty Dumpty will lead a “Happy Birthday” sing-along at 12pm in the Story Center. There will be photo ops, crafts, and egg-themed games.
SacAnime will be in Sacramento for three days from August 29-31, 2025. This is a family-friendly event with activities for all ages including an interactive Cafe Hoshi experience. There will be gaming and cosplay.
